[A small, intimate setting proved to be a fitting environment for fun and fellowship, said attendees and exhibitors at the first Quinte Women's Show.
Twenty-one exhibitors ranging from experts on skin rejuvenation to marital aids to cleaning products attracted hundreds of local women to Saturdays' show. The show, geared to women 18 and older, will become an annual event due to its' success, organizers said.
"It's been very well received, that's for sure," said Cindy Dow, one half of the two-woman team that organized the event. "It's been great. It's a great turn-out and there's a lot of excitement."
Dow, owner of Interiors by Cindy, said the idea for such a show came to her after she had arranged a day away in Toronto with a group of friends.
She said she thought local women would like to experience something similar minus the travel. She contacted fellow entrepreneur Jane Toombes and the pair began organizing the show that took place at the Capers Brasserie banquet rooms.
The idea of the event, Dow said, is simple. "We just wanted women to have the opportunity to get together, have some fun and enjoy some fellowship."
And that's exactly what the event delivered, said attendee Tacia Sherry.
"I think it's a great idea for Belleville," Sherry, 34, said. "I left my husband and kids home, I came out with some friends and I'm spending money. We need more events like this."
Though Toombes and Dow said the event - which also featured guest speakers on topics such as healthy eating and wearing makeup - will grow in years and move to a bigger venue, some like the smaller setting.
"We have a consultative approach so we're not looking for an environment where there's thousands of people streaming by," said Joann Daponte of Skin Beautiful. "We can use this forum to showcase our new skin analysis system and talk directly to the women here."
Representing Shaklee, a company producing all natural cleaning products, Kim Suurdt also praised the setting. She said she had talked to many women at her booth and plans to participate in the event in the future. "It's awesome because women are the main shoppers in the household today so to target women is a great idea," Suurdt said.

Attendees were also helping a cause through a raffle draw - all proceeds going to Gleaners Food Bank.]
